TWD: Chocolate Oatmeal Drops (Squares)

This week’s Tuesdays With Dorie selection is Chocolate Oatmeal Drops. I read reports that the cookies spread a lot, which I always find a little disappointing (my oven kind of crisps things up). In order to prevent this, I turned them into bar cookies. The other reports were that they tasted brownie-esque, so I figured it made sense. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: when you bake (nearly) every single recipe from a book, there are bound to be some that aren’t huge hits, and this was one of them. We may have gotten a little more excited about them if we hadn’t had extra special treats around for Valentine’s Day. These humble cookies were a bit overshadowed by the brioche sticky buns I made from the Flour Bakery cookbook and some insanely good cupcakes Josh brought home last night.

Since I do love both oats and chocolate, they were definitely worth a try, and I’m sure the leftovers will be appreciated by co-workers. We rated these cookies a 6.5 for Deliciousness (I think if I presented them to Josh as “breakfast bars,” he would have given them a higher rating) and I gave them a 2 for Effort, for an EDR of 3.25. Many thanks to Caroline and Claire of Bake with Us for hosting this week. You can find the recipe here on their site, and after a couple weeks off, I am looking forward to seeing how my fellow bakers fared.

Never mind - you are right that there are always going to be some better than others in a book. Your bar cookie version looks scrumptious.

the bar idea was a good one. sorry these didn't wow you. I'm sure my rating would have gone up if these were called breakfast bars too!

what a great idea, turning these into bar cookies! they look delish! i loved these but i agree, not every recipe can be a winner.

but then again, i believe that there isn't a single recipe that can't be tweaked to make it a winner :)

The bar version sounds good. Mine were thin but chewy. Not everything can be a hit though; at least these weren't time-consuming to make.

I had a cookies this morning as a mid-morning snack, so I could definately see these working as a breakfast treat. Sorry you didn't love them, but it is hard to compete with a cupcake:) Thanks for baking with us this week!

You have the Flour cookbook too? There are a bunch of us who have been talking about baking together (informally). The brioche is up there on my list - I want to make those donuts :)

I definitely felt the same way about the cookies as you guys, but like you said, can't love 'em all.

Square ones, how fun is that! I didn't make these as I didn't feel like messing with chocolate that week but now that I see these I am thinking the guys would love them and I should do a rewind with them.
