TWD: Sweet Potato Biscuits


This week’s Tuesdays With Dorie recipe is Sweet Potato Biscuits. The last time I combined sweet potatoes and flour, to make gnocchi, it was a big, bland mess (I guess that’s what I get for thinking I could make my own recipe), and so there was really nowhere to go but up. And it did! Biscuits have always been a baked good I could take or leave, but with the addition of sweet potato, nutmeg, and a little brown sugar they were fantastic! Not only were the biscuits tasty, they were super-quick and simple to make. I misread the instructions and cut my biscuits a little too thin, so they weren’t as puffy as they could be, but still tender and tasty. I used a fresh sweet potato rather than canned, since baking a sweet potato really isn’t that much work (poke holes, bake uncovered at 400 degrees for about forty-five minutes).



I am not a member of the group Craving Ellie in My Belly, but some of the blogs I read are. Last week I read some positive reviews of a Tuscan Vegetable Soup and decided to make it to eat with these biscuits, which was a great dinner. I’ve resisted joining more than two online food-related groups, but I have not been able to refrain from buying a number of cookbooks associated with the various groups; it’s a good thing at least one of them is full of healthy (and delicious) recipes! Wasn't Ellie's soup tasty? I tell ya, I really haven't had anything terrible from that cookbook. I'm looking forward to her next one. Anyway...nice biscuits! They turned out great.

These sound wonderful and a great way to turn soup into a special meal. The thinner (flatter?) biscuits look just fine to me and I kind of like the idea of eating two for the calorie cost of one. Are there any great cookbooks on your Amazon wish list?

I thought that was the Tuscan Soup I saw lurking in the background! I am making another batch tomorrow so we can dish it up now and again, it was so good! These biscuits would taste really nice with that soup! How did you get all the height on yours? I tried...twice! Still did not get the height I wanted, but you did! Great post, love the photos!

p.s.We seem to think alike about cream cheese frosting (in post re: cookies). I also like it on cinnamon rolls but not on cookies.

These look great! Sounds like a perfect combination with the soup. I also fixed vegetable soup with the biscuits. These cooking blog groups can be addictive!

Ummm yum soup and biscuits sound ridiculously good. Great choice. My darn sweet tooth always goes in the sweet direction. Wish I could have put my blinders on and added savory like you did. hehe Well I think yours look wonderful just so pretty. I was afraid of overmixing so mine were a little mottled. oh well, its just food. hehe

Your biscuits look really nice and I think they rose quite nicely! Did you have to make any other adjustments using the fresh yams vs the canned? Just wondering if the dough would be easier to handle with fresh yams. I love the flavor of these but not the sticky dough!

I think the weight lifting is hard for us ladies more then the cardio..I make myself do it three days a week. I get so sore but keep pushing on! I hope you will find some joy in it! I guess the nice toned arms and legs are a good incentive to keep me going!
