TWD: Dulce de Leche Duos
Even though I am constantly baking, we can never resist ordering a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies –there’s the novelty that they are only available for a brief time each year and it’s comforting to have your favorite childhood treats. Last year we even saw the Girl Scout we buy the cookies from trying to help a cat, so we know she’s a good Girl Scout. Anyway, this year we were enticed by a new flavor, Dulce de Leche. Josh tried them and informed me that they were Dulce de Disappointing. I decided to take his word for it and left the cookies in the kitchen at my office, where they did disappear. This week’s Tuesdays With Dorie recipe is Dulce de Leche Duos and these cookies are not disappointing at all.
The recipe says that Dulce de Leche is readily available, but I don’t believe I’ve seen it at any markets around here. I suspect if I had, it would have made its way into my grocery cart somehow. The Problems & Questions section of the TWD site came through with several recipes, though, and I made my Dulce de Leche using David Lebovitz’s method, which consists of sprinkling some sea salt on condensed milk and letting it cook in a water bath. When I removed the Dulce de Leche from the oven, it looked really lumpy and curdled, but a short spin in the mixer did wonders for its texture and it tasted fantastic. Oh, and the chewy, caramelly cookies were superb. I thought they were good enough to eat without the filling.
This recipe rated a 9 for Deliciousness and a 3 for Effort, for an EDR of 3. Many thanks to Jodie of Beansy Loves Cake for picking this delightful recipe. You can find the recipe on Jodie’s site and visit the TWD blogroll for more cookies.
I think you have something there--just as good without the filling. Glad you like them but I laughed at your husband's name for them.
ReplyDeleteYour cookies look great!
ReplyDeleteGirl Scout cookies...yum!
ReplyDeleteYour cookies are lovely.
I love me some Samoas, but I love these cookies even more!! Yours look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your husband's accessment of dulce de disappointing. They were "ok" but just weren't the wow I was expecting from DDL girl scout cookies. I guess I have high standards set by the Samoa. HA! Glad you and hubs enjoyed these cookies!

Your cookies look wonderful and I totally agree with your hubby's assessment of the DDL Girl Scout Cookies.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about Girl Scout cookies. I always have to get some Thin Mints...which reminds me...they're in the freezer...
ReplyDeleteOh yes, your cookies look so great! So much better than my flat nubby ones. I also have trouble finding dulce de leche in a jar Maybe it's a northern California thing.
they look way better than girl scout cookies- homemade is always better!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that these weren't dulce de disappointing! Haha!
ReplyDeleteThey look great! I used the same method for the dulce de leche and I was able to whisk the lumps out. As good as Girl Scout cookies are, homemade is better!
ReplyDeleteMmm, looking at your cookies makes me wish I had some more! They look perfect.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to find dulce de leche in cans anywhere in my area. I did find some in a plastic bottle (?) today and bought it to try these cookies with.
ReplyDeleteYour husband is pretty funny. We liked these cookies too.

I agree Margot - these were definitely good enough to eat on their own. That's the way I preferred them actually. I love that yours look a little thicker, I wish mine hadn't been quite as thin.
ReplyDeleteWe don't know any Girl Scouts cookies so I haven't had them in years, which is probably a good thing given my complete lack of self control :)
Wow, just rereading my comment (probably should do that before I hit submit) and realized the last sentence makes absolutely no sense. What I meant to say is that we don't know any Girl Scouts so I haven't had GS cookies in years...
ReplyDeleteYour cookies look delcious! I only wish they did Girl Scout cookies over here in Britain :-)
ReplyDeleteoh they look so soft and chewy! I had to do a rewind this week, didn't have the ingredients. Still want to make them though!
ReplyDeleteYour cookies look like they have the perfect texture and are so cute- yum!
